In 2013, the University of the Basque Country's Mikel Laboa Katedra commissioned several works for symphonic and chamber ensembles by composers who were fond of the singer. Marisol Bastida, widow of the singer and pediatrician, expressed her wish at the occasion of the 2014-15 season of incorporating the symphonic version of 'Gernika-Lekeitio 4', one of the most popular and meaningful pieces of his repertory, and also one of the pieces he cherished the most. We therefore decided to propose a new version based on several Mikel Laboa's recorded testimonies, keeping the rhythmic and vocal inflections which were so unique to his songs. Mikel didn't write the music down, so we had to reconstruct the text directly from the versions which he had sung and played himself. It's a sort of dictation transcribed to orchestra, whose sound is forged by the memory of my Basque childhood and Laboa's unforgettable, penetrating voice. We've strived to respect the metrical contours, the harmonies guided by the hand and the fingers upon the frets, while his voice —?by turns husky and nasal?— slips past the exact notes, appearing strangely serene when intoning the Navarrese folksong Haika Mutil at the end.

En 2013, la Mikel Laboa Katedra de l'Université du Pays basque entreprit de commander la composition de plusieurs œuvres, symphoniques et de chambre, à des compositeurs attachés à la personnalité du chanteur. Pour leur création lors de la saison 2014-2015, Marisol Bastida, veuve du chanteur et pédiatre, avait exprimé le souhait d'incorporer la version symphonique de 'Gernika-Lekeitio 4', l'une des pièces les plus populaires et significatives de son répertoire, et celle à laquelle il tenait le plus. En accord avec elle, nous décidâmes d'en proposer une nouvelle en prenant les différents témoignages que Mikel Laboa avait enregistrés et en gardant les inflexions rythmiques et vocales si particulières qu'il imprimait à ses chansons. Mikel n'écrivait pas de musique : c'est donc à partir des versions chantées et jouées à la guitare par lui-même que nous dûmes reconstruire le texte écrit. Cette transcription est une sorte de dictée dont le son orchestral est forgé par la mémoire de ma jeunesse basque et de la voix de Laboa, pénétrante et inoubliable —?elle tâche de garder les contours métriques, les harmonies guidées par la main et les doigts sur les frettes, et sa voix qui esquive les notes exactes, tour à tour rauque et nasale, étrangement sereine quand à la fin elle reprend le 'Haika Mutil', un chant du folklore navarrais.
