It was not Genesis according to the Bible, much too anecdotal, that inspired my itinerary, but rather scienti c and para-scienti c books by Hubert Reeves, Carl Sagan, Robert Clarke, Steven Weinberg, that gave me the main markers. The words that describe astrophysical phenomenon are incentive enough to stimulate our musical imagination and feed this world’s reverie. Nothing is more exciting for it than a paradoxical acousmatic vision of the creation of the world. [Bernard Parmegiani]
The work is divided into three distinctive opus, qualified by the composer as “periods” which can be proposed separately:
1. ‘Lumière noire’ (17'36)
2. ‘Métamorphose du vide’ (23'11)
3. ‘Signes de vie’ (32'00)
LUMIÈRE NOIRE (BLACK LIGHT) (17’35)
In chronological order: Moins l’in ni (Minus the Infinite); Instant 0; Premières forces-premières formes (Prime Forces – Prime Forms).
The dreamer of the world keeps falling into his own abyss to reach his original point. Black light... Seething latent energies, incommensurable, with no conscious strategy. Chemistry with no resolution. Layers crossed by the most essential elements. An echo within an echo multiplies space by itself. Everything is ready to “start”.
The beginning of this movement represents the most obscure part of cosmic evolution. It inspired my musical reverie well before the astrophysicists’ Big Bang did.
The absence of tone that largely characterizes the sound used in this piece results from the extensive use of “white noise”, a sound whose mass should statistically contain all the accumulated frequencies. The deliberate choice of these rough, emerging, bursting sounds, treated in spurts, shifting and repeated with a growing strength, represented images that are closer to indescribable physical phenomenon.
Secondly, a first trial at organizing things leads to opposing and converging forces, to a dynamic of matter in the making then evolving towards more fragile and constantly aborted forms.
It is ending with the first sparkles of light, generated by sounds interfering with the space between medium and high pitches. [Bernard Parmegiani]

Ce n’est pas la genèse biblique (au caractère trop anecdotique) qui a inspiré mon itinéraire. Des ouvrages scientifiques ou para-scientifiques (Hubert Reeves, Carl Sagan, Robert Clarke, Steven Weinberg) m’ont fourni les principaux points de repère. Les mots qui décrivent les phénomènes de l’astrophysique sont suffisamment incitatifs pour provoquer l’imagination musicale et nourrir cette rêverie du monde. Rien n’est plus excitant pour celle-ci qu’une paradoxale vision acousmatique de la création du monde. [Bernard Parmegiani]

Le rêveur de monde n’en finit plus de s’abîmer en lui-même pour tendre vers le point de son origine. Lumière noire… bouillon d’énergies latentes, incommensurables, sans stratégie consciente. Chimie sans résolution. Nappes traversées par les éléments les plus essentiels. L’écho dans l’écho multiplie l’espace par lui-même. Tout est là pour “commencer”.
Le début de ce mouvement représente la partie la plus obscure dans l’évolution cosmique. Précédant le big-bang des astrophysiciens, elle a suscité ma rêverie musicale.
L’absence de tonalité qui caractérise une grande partie du matériau sonore choisi pour Lumière noire est due à l’utilisation de “bruits blancs” définis comme sons dont la masse contient en principe toutes les fréquences accumulées statistiquement. Le choix délibéré de ces sons bruts, puis profilés, éclatés, traités en jaillissements, glissements ou répétés avec une force accrue, représentait dans mon imagerie mentale ce qu’il y a de plus suggestif de phénomènes physiquement indescriptibles.
Dans un second temps, l’ébauche d’une organisation donne lieu à des oppositions ou des convergences de forces, à une dynamique de la matière à l’état naissant, puis évoluante vers des formes encore fragiles et constamment avortées.
Les prémisses de la lumière, en n, dues à l’utilisation de sons dont les zones de hauteur interfèrent entre le médium et l’aigu. [Bernard Parmegiani]

Bernard Parmegiani is a pioneer and leading light of electroacoustic music. He leaves behind him a vast and fascinating œuvre, a priceless heritage for today's generation.
His life was structured around a few mainstays: working in a studio filled with machines, lighting a pipe filled with Amsterdamer, in the company of his wife (his “first ear”), and not least, a few affectionate cats.
