ENTRE-TEMPS (MID-TIME)

As an opening, ‘Entre-temps’, provides us with the most symbolical, but also the most illusory picture of the slow down passing of duration: the deceleration of the ticking of a clock. Sound intervals seem to emerge through the cracks between these occasional events, just like souvenir postcards from a close or distant routine. Blurred pictures similar to those we remember when fed up with the mundane and immediate reality we are trying to escape. In the second movement, the sonic body in constant rebound, as if resisting, ties us to the present, in spite of the silence separating the figures from the trajectories. The constant variations prevent us from escaping the “current” evolution. Each silence is an expectation, the time gaps seems to dissolve. A counterpoint appears to diversify the performance, a sort of distraction from drifting sound bodies.
Later, more drifting harmonic curves, as if excluded from an alter-time, dilated and slow to move, taken out of context just a moment before re-entering it in the shape of a rhythmic counterpoint. A combined game where elements hitherto exposed mix with and try to combine the moments, the mid-times… eventually just as important in determining the uninterrupted, uncompressed and irreversible time flow. [Bernard Parmegiani]

‘Plain-temps’ is a triptych composed between 1991 and 1993, including ‘Présent composé’ (Composed Present), ‘Entre-temps’ (Mid-time) and ‘Plain-temps’ (Plain Time). It is probably in these pieces that the power of Orpheus is most kept at a bay —in a quiet manner— and without resorting to either exercise or exorcism. The sound material is lighter, airier and more rare. Silences come through. Everyday sounds (doors, voices, footsteps, birds, insects, falling leaves, atmospheres, etc.), all “ephemeral” recordings, are set like recurrent anchors the musical meditation comes back to probe. They add to the “indifferent” and monastic beats of the clock (the same beats that structure ‘Entre-temps’ and return in ‘Plain-temps’). The concern seems to have moved: it is not so much a question of being carried away as to ask ourselves what can carry us away. This can be experienced in the “slowed down” and “measured” beats of Présence (third movement of ‘Présent composé’), or the beginning of ‘Entre-temps’ where we seem to be listening to the birth of musical duration through the slow set up of unrelated sound weavings. [Bernard Parmegiani]
ENTRE-TEMPS

[Bernard Parmegiani]
