Description
fr

This book grew out of a long process centered on Moondog’s autobiographical text, published here for the first time.

Written in verse, it unfolds as a sequence of poetic impressions shaped by sound, rhythm and association rather than chronology. Moondog’s writing is inseparable from his delight in language. His use of novameter, a strict poetic form, underscores the musical nature of the text and reflects a creative practice that draws freely across traditions and cultural boundaries.

This edition is built around two sources: a forty-five-page typed version dictated to his manager Ilona Goebel-Sommer, and the Braille manuscript transcribed directly from the archives by Wolfgang Gnida. Text variations between these sources are indicated throughout the book. Bringing these documents to light raised fundamental editorial questions regarding interpretation, context and responsibility toward the author’s voice.

For these reasons, this edition does not present a conventional translation. Rather than translating the text away from English, it preserves Moondog’s original language and enriches it with notes, references and contextual information. The aim is not to explain the text, but to accompany it, allowing readers to enter its world. Building on a glossary from Moondog’s original typescript, the commentary has been expanded to form a lexicon of more than two hundred entries, complemented by a short biography titled “Who is Moondog?”.

Ultimately, this book is a statement of urgency. Publishing poetry today, especially poetry that resists simplification, is not merely an archival gesture, but a necessary one. In a time marked by speed, reduction and noise, Moondog’s writing insists on attention, listening and play — affirming poetry as a vital and essential form of expression.

Moondog
About

1916 – 1999

Moondog —born Louis Thomas Hardin—stands as a visionary avant-garde icon, bridging the gap between classical composition, primal rhythms and the pulse of the New York streets.

Also known as “The Viking of 6th Avenue”, this timeless artist crafts a singular universe through his invention of instruments, mastery of counterpoint and rhythmic soundscapes… An apparent nonchalance, often underpinned by a complex musical architecture in a blend of cultures.

His autobiography in verse is available for the very first time at Maison ONA.
1916 – 1999
