Description

Writing Uher (from the Basque for “trouble”), for bass saxophone, piano and percussion, in 2013, I was already giving myself an unsolvable riddle — the fusion of instruments whose juxtaposition corresponds neither to widening range nor to some commonality in how their sounds are produced. Whereas in Irarki (from the Basque for “engraving”, 2020) for clarinet, violin and accordion, I attempted to trace the three instruments along a continuous grid line. They dig into their groove, engraving their presence. In Irarki 2, the three instruments from this line up find some territories in common and forge a new, shared, sonic texture in which their timbres can converge. The saxophone highlights and enriches the accordion’s mid-range reeds while the double bass lends its weight in the low ends as well as some acidity in the high ends. The ensemble’s focused clarity lies within the potential of its ranges. This work then becomes a sort of antidote to the original question. Its content results in a familiar vocabulary, although in among reflections, multiple movements, and the three musicians’ disguising gestures and obscuring games, there’s a harmony that will never let itself be fully defined. Black on white or bas-relief destined to be colored, leaving marks and traces upon a prolix canvas, these instruments enter a graphical and ethereal land, alternating in their quest for a space to call their own.
