‘Dérivatif’ is the title that Luc Ferrari gave to this next piece, and it remained at an initial stage of his intention. It was on April 12th, 2005.
It was another way to exploit his archives. The project consisted in going through his shelves filled with recordings, to pick out every thirteenth tape. Then these tapes were played and an extract was copied, at random, and then used for his future composition. As this work was already a little tiring for him, he asked for my help. Together, we only picked a small proportion of sounds or bits of sequences.
Before continuing this task I hesitated for almost three years (unthinkable after August 22nd 2005), and the following year, I still refrained from doing it. Convinced that I should not intervene in Luc’s creation in fear of betraying his spirit.
Then, after many consultations with him, without any audible answer, and considering this project should be completed, I took (at the beginning of July 2008) the decision to follow in his creative footsteps after so many years.
I thus continued the project, remembering so intensely the circumstances, times, atmospheres, seasons, and I could not limit myself to making it just a kind of intimate sound catalogue. I thus used all these elements, without cheating, to make a ‘Dérivatif’ my way, without adding any sound that didn’t come from Luc, and using only the necessary technological artifices.
Hanna Schygulla closes the piece in German by the short sentence: “In only one night everything changed.” (Labyrinth Portrait, radiophonic composition with a text by Colette Fellous).

‘Dérivatif’ est le titre que Luc Ferrari donnait à sa prochaine pièce restée pour lui au tout début du stade de l’intention. C’était le 12 avril 2005.
Il s’agissait d’une autre façon d’exploiter ses archives. Son projet consistait à parcourir ses étagères remplies de bandes magnétiques aussi bien d’œuvres nies comme de pré-mixages ou des prises de son et d’en tirer chaque treizième bande pour la poser sur le magnétophone et d’en copier un extrait “n’importe où” servant à sa future composition. Comme ce travail était déjà un peu fatigant pour lui, il m’a demandé de l’aider. Ensemble, nous n’avons encore prélevé qu’une petite partie de sons ou de bribes de séquences.
Avant de poursuivre cette tâche j’hésitai presque trois ans — impensable après le 22 août 2005 — et l’année suivante, je me l’interdisais encore, convaincue que je n’avais pas à m’immiscer dans la création de Luc et surtout : cette crainte de trahir son esprit.
Puis, après maintes consultations avec lui, sans réponse audible et regrettant que ce projet ne voie pas le jour, j’ai, début juillet 2008, pris la joyeuse décision de poursuivre ses traces au fil de tant d’années de création.
J’ai donc continué ce travail de copie me remémorant si intensément les circonstances des époques, les atmosphères, les saisons et n’ai pu me limiter à n’en faire qu’une sorte de catalogue sonore intime. J’ai ainsi emprunté pour moi tous ces éléments pour, vraiment sans tricher, faire un ‘Dérivatif’ à ma manière, sans ajouter un seul son étranger à Luc et n’utilisant qu’un minimum d’artifices de la technologie.
